Calathea roseopicta, commonly known as Calathea Medallion or more broadly as a Prayer Plant, is a species in the Marantaceae family and is native to Brazil. The Medallion has large ornate leaves with a purple underside. Like other Calathea, the Medallion is an active plant. It raises and lowers its leaves throughout the day to maximize light intake and growth potential as it follows the sunlight. They enjoy medium indirect light, as bright light can easily burn their delicate leaves. They should be watered regularly so that the soil is always lightly moist and should not dry out completely, as dry soil can lead to browning in the leaves.
The Calathea prefers medium to bright, indirect light and is sensitive to direct sunlight.
The Calathea prefer to be moist but not wet or saturated. From our experience it is easy to over water plants so make sure to feel the dirt by dipping your finger 2 - 3 inches in the soil. Yellow leaves are a sign of overwater so if you see them, simply scale down the amount of water.
Similar to humans, plants like the Calathea prefer temperatures of 65⁰ to 85⁰.
A very light feeder, apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength once every 1 - 3 months.
Our Classic Collection features a tapered terracotta design in two sizes and three styles highlighted by its beautiful color and lush green foliage. The Classic is made of terracotta: a porous, breathable material that allows for water and air circulation in the soil and creates a healthy environment for the plant. The word terracotta can trace its roots back to the Latin words “terra cocta” meaning baked earth. This clay-based pot minimizes over-watering and helps plants maintain healthy roots by absorbing excess moisture from the soil. In addition to its health benefits terracotta is known for developing a unique patina that gives it a beautiful and timeless look as it ages. Inspired by the minimalist lifestyle, this planter is simplistic, tasteful, and authentic.
